The Inquiry

How do we visually and textually document the invisible feedback gaps that directly impact the confidence, creative development, and degree outcomes of Black creative students? This project investigated how a lack of shared reference points and culturally relevant knowledge among institutional tutors directly influences assessment biases and widens the awarding gap within creative pathways

Action Research as a Site of Care

Before materializing our research into the live intervention of BLACCC, I operated as a Strategic Consultant and "Critical Friend" to Huguette Tchiapi’s foundational research project, Colouring Critique. This collaboration allowed us to bridge her systemic surveys with my own ongoing practice-based research into relational facilitation and accessible peer learning, transforming institutional data into a direct springboard for student-led action
My roles within this research phase include:

  • Publication Advisor and Contributor for the official UAL research publication, Colouring Critique Volume 01, establishing the evidence base for long-term institutional accountability
  • Panelist at the UAL Education Conference (July 2024), where we co-delivered the strategic panel session, "Fashion Feedback: Critiquing the Crit". Drawing on my Fine Art and Changemaker background, I expanded the scope of the research by demonstrating how these feedback challenges impact students across multiple disciplines beyond the Fashion pathway

Blk Art Collective (BLACCC) was developed through collaboration between two complementary Changemaker projects at Central Saint Martins. Huguette Tchiapi's Colouring Critique research identified disparities in culturally informed critique experienced by Black students and highlighted the need for institutional change. In parallel, Dionne Elizabeth's Changemaker project explored alternative arts pedagogies, embodied learning, critique-as-care and community-led learning spaces through a series of practice-based interventions designed to create more inclusive and accessible student experiences. Her socially engaged practice and community-led learning environments developed through a wider body of participatory practice.

Together these complementary strands informed the development of BLACCC as a practical pilot intervention.

These strands tie together the work to build what is now BLACCC. Here’s a breakdown of my roles:

  • Panelist at the UAL Education conference
  • Colouring Critique publication advisor + contributor for Colouring Critique, a Changemaker project (You can read about the projects and read the publication on the ual website here)
  • Co-founder, developer, designer, host + facilitator of BLACCC//BLK Art Collective CSM (2024-)
