How do we sustain a feeling of deep community, mutual visibility, and creative sanctuary across profound physical distances? Portal of Pizzazz addresses the systemic barriers that isolate low-residency, chronically ill, and disabled practitioners from traditional studio environments.
How do we sustain a feeling of deep community, mutual visibility, and creative sanctuary across profound physical distances? Portal of Pizzazz addresses not only the complicated diasporic experience of Being absent and physically distant from Homelands and kin, it also meets kin who experience systemic access barriers that isolate low-residency, chronically ill, and disabled practitioners from traditional, rigid studio environments, using cross-disciplinary connection to imagine infinite possibilities beyond binaries.
Practice-Based Research as a Site of Care
This work was built intentionally as a hybrid interactive ecosystem (measuring 150 x 150cm physically) that bridges physical gallery space with digital environments and plays with embodied temporalities across time, space, place and memory.
The installation combined a physical bulletin board, an online chatroom, video collages, and and postcard print distributions. At it’s heart, I integrated FEELINGS Radio, a 24/7 broadcasting platform operating via sonic meditations, phone voicemail archives, and live collaborative broadcasts. This structure allowed students unable to attend in person to actively direct, contribute to, and feel welcome within the exhibition space in real and crip time.
I built FEELINGS radio station to be a living, evolving platform that continues to serve as a site for sonic experimentation, collective storytelling, and community connection and holds life beyond the show years later.
